A packaging line can expose counts and states without anyone agreeing what those fields mean. OPC UA is one way to structure the meaning. It does not, by itself, make a machine PackML-compliant, and it is not MQTT.
The OPC Foundation describes OPC UA, released in 2008, as a platform-independent service-oriented architecture with comprehensive information modelling for complex information. It lists platform independence from an embedded controller to cloud infrastructure, plus encryption, authentication and auditing. That is the layer on which a packaging information model can sit. It is not a statement that any particular packaging machine implements it.
PackML, on the OMAC page, is the machine-data and look-and-feel standard adopted as ISA-TR88.00.02. The OPC Foundation publishes a separate companion, OPC UA for PackML — Common Object Model, shown as v1.01. Its contents include PackML state and mode terms, status and admin objects, and methods such as SetUnitMode, SetMachSpeed, SetProduct, Abort, Clear, Stop, Reset and Start. Those names show the intended mapping. They do not show that a given controller has loaded that model.
What to ask a supplier
Ask for the companion specification version, the namespace, and a sample of live values with units. A speed field without a unit and without a statement of whether it is setpoint or actual is not yet useful. Example values in integration workshops should be labelled simulated. This site has not connected a machine.
Vendor implementation notes, when you use them, stay attributed to that vendor. They are not an independent test and they are not this site’s capability. A modelled tag list is also not a functional-safety argument.
The PackML reading guide covers the machine-state side. A generic layer sketch is in industrial IoT architecture. Both sit under Industrial Connectivity.
Method and sources
The OPC Foundation OPC UA page and the OPC 30050 v1.01 contents were read on 14 October 2026, as was the OMAC PackML page. Node addresses from a live server were not collected.
